Why we oppose Seismic blasting for oil in the Great Australian Bight.

"Airgun surveys have an enormous environmental footprint. For blue and other endangered great whales, for example, such surveys have been shown to disrupt activities essential to foraging and reproduction over vast ocean areas. Additionally, surveys could increase the risk of calves being separated from their mothers, the effects of which can be lethal, and, over time, cause chronic behavioral and physiological stress, suppressing reproduction and increasing mortality and morbidity.

"The impacts of airguns extend beyond marine mammals to all marine life. Many other marine animals respond to sound, and their ability to hear other animals and acoustic cues in their environment are critical to survival. Seismic surveys have been shown to displace commercial species of fish, with the effect in some fisheries of dramatically depressing catch rates. Airguns can also cause mortality in fish eggs and larvae, induce hearing loss and physiological stress, interfere with adult breeding calls, and degrade anti-predator response: raising concerns about potentially massive impacts on fish populations. In some species of invertebrates, such as scallops, airgun shots and other low-frequency noises have been shown to interfere with larval or embryonic development. And threatened and endangered sea turtles, although almost completely unstudied for their vulnerability to noise impacts, have their most sensitive hearing in the same low frequencies in which most airgun energy is concentrated."

Ocean Sailing Club - RYA Navigation Class

The current Yachtmaster Theory class is in week 4 of its 5 week programme.

Here students are working on a passage plan for a short offshore voyage in our great club training room

If you would like to know more about RYA theory or practical classes (from Competent Crew to Yachtmaster) just call our sailing coach, Peter Edington, for a chat about boats. Always happy to hear from you. 0405 430525

Why Join the Ocean Sailing Club?

Sally and Peter Edington lived aboard their 60-foot yacht Loquax for many years. With their teenage daughters they cruised the Med, the Caribbean and the South Pacific.

By 2013, they felt they should share their knowledge, and their yacht, with anyone who dreams of the Ocean life - and that was the start of The Ocean Sailing Club.

Loquax is now owned by the UK-based non-profit Club and it is Sally and Peter's hope that people from many diverse walks of life will join them on board. The membership is deliberately set at an affordable £30 ($50) per year, which you recoup from any training you do, to make this accessible to as many as possible.

On board, you can experience the joys and master the skills of Ocean Sailing. Feel the thrill of landfall at a distant island, knowing you share this exquisite moment with the great sailors of our time and of history.

The Club has over one hundred members as we move into 2018, and we look forward to having you join us.

Great sailing events

As an OSC member the club's 60 foot yacht is available for you to cruise the harbour for half-days, evenings and whole days. Or you can venture offshore with coastal trips over a weekend or longer. See the 'What We Do' page.

Relax on board with friends

Why not join one of our regular outings on the harbour? Make yourself at home on the yacht. Swim, cook dinner (or just watch others do it) or just relax with friends watching the sun set as the yacht lies at anchor. See the 'What We Do' page.

Go on sailing holidays somewhere a bit more exotic

Every year the Club's yacht takes time off to visit locations a bit off the beaten track - see some wildlife, explore some more remote anchorages - under the supervision of an experienced skipper. See the 'Expeditions & Holidays' page.

Sail Training

We run in-house cost price sailing courses for members - probably noticeably cheaper than regular sailing schools, because we think that fun and safety go hand in hand.

Whether you've just decided to learn to sail or you're already a proficient sailor, there's a schedule of progressive courses from RYA "Start Yachting" weekend, through "Competent Crew", up to RYA "Yachtmaster Coastal", and even "Yachtmaster Ocean" Theory. We also offer Yachtmaster exam preparation. See the 'Sail Training' page.

Note

In the interests of safety, the yacht will always be under the supervision of a club-approved skipper.

For the club's Social sailing events, the Skipper is supplied by the Club. If you would like to use the Club yacht for your own social events or for group mile-building cruises, we can put you in touch with our Sailing Coach, who will be happy to make sure that your event is run safely (sample costs)

Only registered members of the Ocean Sailing Club are allowed on board the yacht for any sailing event. For more information, just email or call us.

As a British-registered non-profit organisation, all transactions are deemed to take place in the UK and under English Law. The Ocean Sailing Club charges membership and product prices in UK pounds, however the club will accept payment in the local currency of where their yacht is at the time. The Club may refer to prices in currencies other than UK Pounds, those prices are indicative only of the actual UK prices and are shown for comparison purposes
