About The Ocean Sailing Club

Sally and Peter Edington lived aboard their 60-foot yacht Loquax for many years. With their teenage daughters they cruised the Med, the Caribbean and the South Pacific.

By 2013, they felt they should share their knowledge, and their yacht, with anyone who dreams of the Ocean life - and that was the start of The Ocean Sailing Club.

Loquax is now owned by the UK-based non-profit Club and it is Sally and Peter's hope that people from many diverse walks of life will join them on board. The membership is deliberately set at an affordable £30 ($50) per year, which you recoup from any training you do, to make this accessible to as many as possible.

On board, you can experience the joys and master the skills of Ocean Sailing. Feel the thrill of landfall at a distant island, knowing you share this exquisite moment with the great sailors of our time and of history.

The Club has over one hundred members.

2020 Ocean Sailing Opportunities

After the great responses we got to last year's Ocean events, we are offering you a chance to get some serious ocean mile-building, as well as certification as an RYA Watch Leader, or even as Qualifying Passages for your RYA Ocean Yachtmaster.

Click any link in the right hand panel for details of Ocean Sailing in 2020 and 2021

In 2020, there are three great passages:

"Sydney-Tasmania-Eden": This will be a 700+ mile double Bass Strait crossing, leaving Sydney in early November.

"Halfway to Antarctica" leaving Eden at 22 November for Australia's sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island (home of the Australian Antarctic Division) at 55° South. Hopefully time will allow 2-3 days at anchor to watch the fantastic wildlife. But, not to be undertaken lightly.

"Sydney-Hobart return": A second chance to log a Bass Strait crossing, leaving Hobart in mid December, this will be a 800 mile opportunity to get your RYA Watch Leader certificate. There is a chance, also to spend a night or two in Eden on the beautiful south coast of NSW.

In 2021, we will be running the Ends of the Earth Climate Challenge to Cape Horn, South Georgia and Arctic Norway! For details look on the right of this page.

Community Awareness

Supporting our Oceans with fund raising for Sea-Shepherd

February's Social Sail was to raise money for Sea Shepherd's iconic whale-saving ship, The Steve Irwin.

Needing urgent engine repairs, we raised 0ver $2,500 on this fun sailing day for Sea Shepherd. They needed $200,000 to get the Steve Irwin back out there saving whales and protecting our oceans. And our contribution helped make that possible.

Supporting "Seed" Indigenous Australians on the front line against fracking

On July 25th there will be a free sailing day on Sydney Harbour for club members who donate to Seed to help fight fracking on native title areas of the NT. We hope to raise $2000 and can take 10 people on a our 60 foot yacht while maintaining safe social distancing.

Seed Indigenous Youth Climate Network, stand with Traditional Owners and Aboriginal communities across the Northern Territory, to condemned the NT Government’s decision to approve Origin Energy’s environmental management plan for fracking in the NT.

“Despite wet season being just weeks away, this approval allows Origin Energy to start fracking in the Beetaloo Basin at one of the riskiest times of the year,” said Philip Winzer of the Seed Indigenous Youth Climate Network.

Contact Peter Edington on 0405 430 525 or email us from our "Contact" page to reserve a place on that day out.

In the interests of safety, the yacht will always be under the supervision of a club-approved skipper.

For the club's Social sailing events, the Skipper is supplied by the Club. If you would like to use the Club yacht for your own social events or for group mile-building cruises, we can put you in touch with our Sailing Coach, who will be happy to make sure that your event is run safely (sample costs)

Only registered members of the Ocean Sailing Club are allowed on board the yacht for any sailing event. We will be happy to help you arrange your event or to come on one of the Club's own events. Just email or call us.
